RED

Last weekend was the end of my family vacation to top it off my Mom and I decided to see the Tony awarding winning Best Play: Red.  The play revolves around Mark Rothko during the time he was commissioned by Seagram's building for the Four Seasons restaurant.  The play takes place in Rothko's studio and his assistant.  It's a two man play that frames its transitions based on the paintings for the Four Seasons.  The play raises the questions of what is art? what is the meaning of art (to the creator and the viewer)? What does art make you feel?  For Rothko he wanted his paintings to move his viewer's or "Pluse."  Also, it touched on the idea of the artist selling out and creating for the masses and not making art for art's sake.  Art is serious. Art has meaning. Art is based on the past masters to be raped by future artists and the cycle repeated.  The play did not fully answer the questions it raised but it did illustrate the heart and soul that goes into creating art.  It's very intense but have lines that defuse the tension between the actors and the audience.  I found it riveting for a 90 minute production.  It's a must see if you get a chance to catch it before it closes (it was a limited run).
