Yesterday was May Day, which is not only the first day of May, but is also the opening of the new Shepard Fairey exhibit at Dietch Projects in Soho. The celebrated street artist has been doing some great work around the city to hype up the exhibit. I've posted some pics of the one's I've seen around town. There are two more in Brooklyn. I got to the gallery at 5 pm for the 6 pm opening, but didn't make my way until 6:30 pm. As you entered the exhibit I was handed a signed poster of Jasper Johns inspired art work. It was jam packed with people but the frenetic energy just ignited the gallery and made you know that this exhibit was special. For me the exhibit felt like a call to arms, by touching on political, environmental, economic, and cultural issues. He makes nods to Jasper Johns and Hopper and other artists. It's a total must see. Just to bad the electric mob scene of opening night won't be there.
The crowd
Joan Jett
Iggy Pop
Bob Dylan (one of my favs)
Patti Smith
